NATIVE PLANT REVEGETATION PROJECTS

Project: Granite Ranch
Location: Teton County, WY
Date: 2005 - present
Goal:
Control noxious weeds on the Granite Ranch property in order to establish a sustainable native plant community, protect the value of the land, and maintain the habitat functions for the abundant wildlife that exists in the area. An integrated strategy is being employed to reduce chemical use to the minimum required to meet management objectives.

Description:
In 2005 Intermountain Aquatics developed a goal-based integrated weed management plan for the Granite Ranch. The ranch is located on the southern boundary of Grand Teton N.P. and is bounded to the west by a state highway. Both these elements provide numerous plant invaders to the ranch. Construction at the ranch has resulted in acres of disturbed ground open to invasion. Concerned over health-issues and the sensitivity of pristine habitat on the ranch, the owners have decided to undergo weed control with absolute minimal chemical use. A vigilant monitoring regime was followed to catch new invaders before infestations grew to unmanageable size with multiple outbreaks of serious noxious weeds being caught upon establishment. Control methods have included hand removal, mechanical reduction, improving of existing vegetation, along with minimal spot chemical treatment. An insectary of bio-control agents will be established in 2007.
