NATIVE PLANT REVEGETATION PROJECTS

Project: Mackay
Location: Mackay, ID
Date: 2006
Goal:
Convert approximately 310 acres of irrigated hay meadow to native dry land grasses.

Description:
The revegetation goal for this project was two fold 1) establish low-maintenance native cover for upland game and waterfowl and 2) transfer water off previously irrigated hay ground to augment seasonal stream flows for the Warm Springs Creek trout fishery. Revegetation success was achieved by first, spraying the existing vegetation while it was still green and growing. The fields were then disk plowed approximately 2 weeks after herbicide application to break the sod and form a rough seedbed. The following spring, the ground was tilled again to create the final seedbed, fertilized and planted. In order to encourage the establishment of natives and discourage the establishment of weeds, the fields were irrigated infrequently with high intensity bursts through the first year. In 2007, the newly establishing grasses will be sprayed to control broadleaf weeds like sweet clover and mustard. Natives were germinated in the first year and the site will be managed for the next 3 years to insure establishment.
