NATIVE PLANT REVEGETATION PROJECTS

Project: Routt County
Location: Routt County, CO
Date: 2006
Goal:
Wetland mitigation.

Description:
Due to wetland loss caused by construction of a new Justice Center, Routt County Colorado was under obligation to mitigate. Mitigation included a 1.5-acre wetland creation site and a 2.4-acre wetland enhancement site. Intermountain Aquatics was given the task of revegetating the wetland creation site and enhancing the existing wetlands by replacing cattails, which dominated the site, with native sedges using Wetland Sod. The wetland creation site was revegetated with native plants by using containerized plugs and seed. The cattail dominated existing wetlands were sprayed with glyphosate herbicide. After herbicide had taken effect, the cattails were mowed and manually removed from the site. Wetland Sod, vegetated with native sedges, was installed where cattails once stood. The Wetland Sod will serve as a barrier to cattail re-colonization while establishing a native sedge community.
