NATIVE PLANT REVEGETATION PROJECTS

Project: Tongue Point
Location: Astoria, OR
Date: 2005-2006
Goal:
Bio-armor a reclaimed landfill in the tidal zone of the Columbia River on a former Naval Air Station Base.

Description:
The former Tongue Point Naval Air Station is located 3 miles east of Astoria, Oregon on the Columbia River. Intermountain Aquatics was given the task of establishing vegetation within the wetland riparian zone of the tidally influenced Columbia River and adjacent uplands of a reclaimed landfill. Tide levels fluctuated approximately seven feet at the project site. In the fall of 2005, Wetland Sod was installed in the challenging zone of fluctuating tidal levels to armor new fill and establish a self-sustaining native wetland plant community. As of 2006, Wetland Sod establishment was good except where exposed to wave action produced by prevailing winds that had access to the full breadth of the Columbia River. A combination of woody shrubs, herbaceous plugs and seeding was used to revegetate the remaining areas in the fall of 2006. Straw and erosion control fabric was installed as an additional protection measure during plant establishment.
