STREAM PROJECTS

Project: Salt River Side Channel
Location: Star Valley, WY
Date: 2007
Goal:
Increase the available trout habitat and angling opportunities on a side channel of the Salt River.

Description:
The side channel of the Salt River was characterized by steep banks dominated by reed canary grass and a lack of in-stream habitat diversity prior to project construction. The project resulted in the creation of 19 excavated pools, 6 spawning beds, 1 log drop structure, 6 boulder weirs, 27 pocket pools, 13 cover logs, 1 channel constriction and 15 transplanted willows to increase the in-stream habitat diversity. The project was constructed in the winter of 2007 to minimize impacts to the terrestrial plant community and will be monitored for trout species and age-class utilization in the fall of 2007 to determine if the project goals were met.
